Utility Meter "Opt-Out"
The City of Westerville's Advanced Metering Initiative (AMI) is now citywide and the “opt-out” program and associated fee is discontinued as of January 1, 2024. The remaining digital and analog utility meters (less than 1% of Westerville homes) must be converted to an advanced meter for system compliance. Because the “opt-out” program is discontinued, the $5 monthly add-on fee will no longer be charged to your utility bill.
How do I make a service appointment? To avoid a disruption in service, please contact a customer service representative at Westerville Utility Billing to make an appointment for replacement.
There is no cost for the meters or for the service appointment.
What should I expect at a service appointment? Both the water and the power meter replacement will be coordinated at the same time when possible. There will be a brief service outage (in most instances electricity will be disconnected for less than 15 minutes and water will be shut off for less than one hour). The appointment should take about one hour and the resident should be home during this time. Water technicians will need access to your water meter (typically located in your basement). Electric technicians will need access to your meter located on the exterior of your home.
Why is this change required?Westerville is committed to building the infrastructure that meets the quality-of-life expectations of our residents. With the automated reporting of utility consumption, the City of Westerville is keeping pace with national and global competitors that are using similar technology. Now more than 10 years into the advanced metering program, it is no longer cost-effective or efficient to maintain an opt-out program for less than 1% of Westerville homes.
When was this change approved? The discontinuation of the opt-out program was formalized as part of the 2024 Utility Ordinance, which was approved by Westerville City Council on November 14, 2023.
