The Planning and Zoning Division is responsible for current and long-range land use planning in the City of Westerville. Current Planning reviews plans for compliance with the City’s Zoning Code requirements as part of the Development Process, as well as compliance with Uptown design standards for historic preservation. Long-range planning develops and implements the Imagine Westerville! Comprehensive Community Plan and other Area Plans.

Planning and Zoning staff provide technical guidance to three City boards: Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA), and Uptown Review Board (URB). The Planning Commission is responsible for reviewing new development, projects, or uses in the City, while the Board of Zoning Appeals is responsible for hearing requests to vary from the standards of the Zoning Code (e.g. setbacks). The Uptown Review Board is responsible for reviewing changes in the architectural review district which generally encompasses the historic Westerville area.
