Activities of the Department of Public Service, located within the Utilities Maintenance Division and contained in the Water Fund, include maintenance of the system to insure that all residents receive safe, clear, odor free, and pleasant tasting water at all times, the City’s commercial customers receive the water that is needed to allow for the operation of their businesses, and that fire demands are met at all times. These goals are met through many preventive maintenance programs scheduled throughout the year and through continual updates of the water distribution system.

Water Distribution System Maintenance

The Department of Public Service’s goal is to ensure that all customers receive the same quality of water that is pumped from the plant. In order to meet this goal a series of preventative maintenance exercises are performed.

Any known leak in the water distribution system will be repaired as soon as is possible. Any time a water main is extended or a new connection to the line is added a sample of the existing pipe is taken and analyzed for condition. Maintenance records are reviewed looking for indications that pipe and systems are nearing the end of their useful life cycle.

The annual water line flushing program was established to remove any accumulated chemicals that may settle out during the transmission of the water.

Water Distribution System Location

The Department of Public Service has taken on the responsibility for maintaining a GIS mapping program for the Water Distribution, Waste Water Collection and Storm Water Collection Systems. One full-time and one part-time employee are assigned to input information to the base maps as the system is improved or when new areas are added. These maps are updated as the changes are accepted by the City. Maps are updated on the City’s internal mapping system on a quarterly basis.

Water Distribution System Management

Management of the system is done using a work order system. All activities of the program are recorded to a software program. Maintenance cycles are set and repair measures are recorded using the software. This gives management a tool in planning for the needs of the system.
