The City of Westerville participates in a joint contract with Franklin County Public Health (FCPH) for mosquito control services. The current contractor is Vector Disease Control (VDC).  

Area-Wide Treatment

Each year VDC will do an evaluation of the topography of the community and where pools are found in order to determine testing locations. Generally, they will set traps in approximately three to five locations throughout the community.  Additional traps will be set out this year in an effort to reduce the number of nuisance areas.  If West Nile virus is found, an area-wide treatment, spraying, is performed in that area. Spraying may also be performed when West Nile virus is not present but there are large numbers of mosquitoes found. When the spraying is performed, approximately 20 road miles are driven. There is a form on the FCPH web page to request that the contractor not treat at your property.  

Individual Locations

VDC also deals with individual requests for services. When a request is received, VDC will generally meet with the resident to perform a visual survey of the property to help minimize locations where larvae might form. If larvae are found, a barrier treatment may be performed at the affected property.

The overall goal of this program is to develop a system that reduces the mosquito population in the City of Westerville and has little or no impact on the environment of the treated areas. Additionally, the information provided here is designed to provide a level of comfort for the citizens of Westerville that the program is designed to reduce a nuisance and a potential health problem.

Residents are asked to report standing water or flooded areas at mosquito.myfcph.org. Residents can also place service requests for unusual mosquito activity by calling (614) 525-BITE (2483).

Mosquito Safety

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends residents take the following precautions to protect themselves and their families:

• Wear insect repellent that has been registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and follow package directions.

• Wear long sleeves and pants.

• Eliminate standing water around your home (mosquitoes breed in water and it doesn’t take much time).
