Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons
A rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) is a traffic device that can assist pedestrians and cyclists to cross a roadway. Typically these are installed at mid-block locations where there is a need to get the attention of drivers that a pedestrian or cyclist wants to cross the street. These are usually used for situations where there is moderate ped/bike traffic and a shorter crossing distance. When a person uses the pushbutton it activates the flashing lights that face the driver on the road. RRFBs are beneficial since they are less disruptive to traffic and improve visibility/awareness of the crossing.
Important Reminder: It is up to the pedestrian to determine when it is safe to proceed.
Using RRFBs
To cross the street, push the button and then before crossing the street in front of a vehicle, make eye contact with the driver to be certain that they have seen you and intend to stop.
