The forecast in Central Ohio calls for consecutive 90-plus degree days, with a predicted peak this upcoming Thursday, Aug. 24. 

Peak Usage Warning:  Residents who use a smart thermostat and are enrolled in one of Westerville Electric Division’s energy consumption programs may receive a peak usage adjustment this week.

Learn how these high consumption days can impact energy costs in the future.


Keep Cool by Planning Ahead:

  • Bring plenty of cool water for everyone when out in the heat.
  • Wear loose, cool clothing and don't forget the sunblock!
  • Consider spending time inside during the warmest hours of the day. Check out programs at the Westerville Community Center or Westerville Public Library.
  • Make sure you are aware of shaded areas and water fountains when visiting parks.
  • If you live near older adults, be sure to check on them to make sure they are staying cool.
  • Never leave children or animals alone inside a hot car.

Know the Potential Signs for Heat Illnesses:

Heat Cramps Symptoms: Muscular pains/spasms in limbs, abdomen and/or back. If you experience these symptoms: move to a cooler location, remove excess clothing and take sips of a chilled beverage with salt and sugar. Seek medical assistance if symptoms last longer than an hour.

Heat Exhaustion Symptoms: Weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, muscle cramps and/or headache. If you experience these symptoms: Move to a well-ventilated/air-conditioned place, loosen or remove clothing, taking a cool bath and take sips of a chilled beverage with salt and sugar. Seek medical assistance if symptoms last longer than an hour.

Heat Stroke Symptoms: A body temperature of 103 degrees or higher, elevated pulse, dizziness, confusion or unconsciousness; Skin that is red, hot and dry. If you experience these symptoms: Call 9-1-1 and use any means available to cool down until emergency services arrive.
