EcoSmart Choice®, a program offered by American Municipal Power (AMP), gives Westerville Electric Division customers an opportunity to support renewable energy through their monthly utility bills.

Electricity is generated from a variety of fuel types including fossil fuels, nuclear and renewable sources. Nearly 63% of all electricity generated in the U.S. last year came from fossil fuels like natural gas, coal and petroleum. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), fossil fuel sources were responsible for 35% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in the United States in 2016. However, once electricity is generated and sent to the grid, there is no real way to track the source. EcoSmart Choice® allows consumers to support renewable energy equivalent to a portion of their electricity usage.

Here's How It Works

Green pricing programs such as this rely on the use of renewable energy certificates (RECs) to offset the customer’s electricity usage. Westerville Electric residential and commercial customers who choose to join EcoSmart Choice® are able to offset varying levels of their monthly electric usage with renewable energy for an additional base cost of 0.4 cents per kWh ($0.004/kWh) or $4.00/MWh; the current EcoSmart Choice® solicitation offers participation levels of 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%, at the option of the participating AMP member. For example, if a customer uses 750 kWh in a month and is participating at the 100% level, the EcoSmart Choice® program will purchase and retire an equal number of RECs to match that monthly usage and the customer would pay an additional $3.00 ($0.004 X 750) as part of their utility bill that month to cover their chosen participation in the program.

Customers are able to join or leave the program at any time without penalty.
