CONNECT YOUR THERMOSTAT
The Westerville Electric Division (WED) has launched the Community Energy Savings Program, a voluntary rebate program that incentivizes the use of smart thermostats to reduce energy use during times of high electric demands. This program is very similar to our Nest Rush Hour Rewards Program and is meant to expand eligible smart thermostats.
The program is sponsored by American Municipal Power (AMP), of which the Westerville Electric Division is a partner as a public power provider.
Residents and business owners are able to opt-in to the program with compatible smart thermostats. Please see the qualified list below. Once customers have purchased and installed a qualified device, they may complete an online application to connect to the program here. WED approves the application and a $55 Visa e-gift card will be emailed to the participant.
PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
- Available to City of Westerville Electric Division customers.
- Thermostats must be installed at addresses served by the City of Westerville Electric Division.
- You must have an active and registered smart thermostat account.
- You must have a wi-fi internet connection.
- Not available to those with Nest thermostats - those with Nest devices should apply for the Nest Rush Hour Rewards Program.
BENEFITS TO WESTERVILLE
When you sign up for the Community Energy Savings Program, you give your thermostat manufacturer permission to make minor, short-term adjustments to your air conditioning via your thermostat at the request of AMP. This small change reduces power use during periods of peak usage (or peak demand) for electricity. You'll always have ultimate control over your thermostat.
Westerville does not rely on chance to secure reasonable electric rates for customers. The Electric Division purchases power from the market, but the cost of transmission and other bill components are largely out Westerville’s control. Those prices are based on, among other things, the highest peak consumption days in any given year. Therefore, the overall cost of power in the future will be partially based on the highest days of power consumption leading up to that year.
That is to say, a day of extraordinarily high power consumption citywide could ultimately lead to more expensive electric payments in the future for all consumers. It is the Westerville way to look ahead and secure a safe, affordable future for residents. Together, we can make it happen.
