May is Older Americans Month

Join Westerville in the celebration of Older Americans month. Established in 1963, Older Americans month is an annual celebration of the contributions and achievements of older Americans across the country and reaffirms our commitment to honoring our older citizens.

Westerville is committed to being a community where residents of all ages can live, work and play. The City is proudly designated by AARP as an “Age-Friendly Community,” which recognizes the strategic planning undertaken to ensure residents have access to resources they need to thrive in Westerville. This plan was created collectively with community partners and older adults in the community who participated in surveys, focus groups and other feedback opportunities. Read the City’s Age-Friendly Plan and learn more about the initiative.

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) has proclaimed 2024's theme as "Powered by Connection," which recognizes the positive impact of social connections and maintaining meaningful relationships for older adults. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), social connection benefits physical and mental health in many ways, including reduced stress, anxiety and depression, and the physical and mental symptoms that are associated with those conditions. The CDC also found that social connectedness promotes healthy eating, physical activity and healthy weight management, and improves sleep, well-being and overall quality of life.
